Scope series
2018-2020
Series Statement:
Each painting of the Scope series assumes a state of transient figuration and expansive space: a contemporary bodily and worldly image making. The work of this series present the visceral tissue of muscle, bone, and cartilage as a wide-ranging expanse, suggesting an unseen interiority and an immense scope of worldly matter. The title, Scope, reflects a double meaning in the duality of figuration and expansive space: (1) scope as grand perception, and (2) scope as the colloquial term for an orthopedic surgical procedure wherein a joint on the body in inflated with fluid for a small camera-a micro scope-and surgical tools to be inserted into the body for it to be seen, manipulated, and repaired.
